best gadget yet!!!
Wow, had mine 3 days and it really is impressive. Sceptical how well it would work with my aged win98se machine, but it really does the business. The intergration with explorer is seamless after a small driver installation.
There is a learning curve on the firmware interface, (mine was stuck in random mode for ages) but the controls now feel as intuative as my mobile.
Battery life is ok, but always remember to keep it plugged into an adaptor during any file transfers!!!
Supplied software and database functions are rundimentary, but chances are youve already got a well tagged and organised collection of MP3s, and the software to go with them.
Much better sound, feel and features than the equivalent spec I-pod, i really cannot get used to those whell thingies. Preferable in dimensions to any Creative zen model as well.
Tech support on the main website is ok, but the people over at www.misticriver.net really are the best source of information and downloads.

top stuff all round.

my early xmas present to myself
Ok, this year Ive owned several mp3 players, including the new generation ipod, the archos av340 (audio+video player), and creative zen mx. I have either sold them on ebay or returned to the shop after a short while.

This player blows each of them out of the water. I wont bore you with tech specs, Ill simply say that this has the most features, in the most compact design, out of any player on the market. It feels so much sturdier than the ipod, and looks better too (although I prefer the look of the black one they sell in the USA)

The controls system is a joy to use, and the remote with its ample display allows you to not need to remove the iriver from your pocket to see what youre doing. The realtime mp3 encoding is a breeze, as is live recording with a mic.

I have a few minor gripes. Firstly, I like using firewire, and the iriver lacks this. Getting usb2.0 enabled on my pc will sort me out, but at the moment the usb1.1 transfers seem to take an age. The sennheiser earphones that come with the player fall out of my right ear, but I always intended to get a pair of sony MDR-EX71SLBs and if youre spending this much on a player I doubt youll be using the freebie earphones anyway.

I think Ill be keeping this one.

much better alternative to the iPod
I wanted to buy something to replace my ageing MD player, and was thinking about the iPod until I realised its total lack of features. For the same price as the 20Gb iPod, you can get the iRiver which has optical & anaolgue line in/out, built-in FM radio, and remote and case as standard. It has a built-in mic so you can use it as a dictaphone, or use the line in to record straight from your hi-fi (no need for pc) which is great for ripping your vinyl straight to MP3. You can encode high quality .wav files too.
The headphones that come with it are admittedly not that great, and it does sound much better with a quality pair. If you want a simple player go for the iPod, but for versatility go for the iRiver. The battery life is about 2x that of the iPod, and although the iPod is very sleek, I dont think the look of this is bad at all.
Id never heard of iRiver till I bought this, but if you do some research on the net, the reviews say it all - who needs flashy tv ads when youve got a top quality product...
